Using Drones to Take a "Census"

China has officially released the results of its seventh national population census. China's population stood at 1.4117.8 billion, an increase of 72.06 million compared with the last census, with an average annual growth rate of 0.53 percent, the data showed. According to the data, China's population has maintained a low-speed growth trend for 10 years, and China is still the world's most populous country.

How can such accurate data be obtained? Most people think of a census as just a government official going door to door to gather information about the population. But in fact, the census is a huge, long-term and complex project, which cannot be separated from the efforts of cadres, but also can not be separated from the help of various intelligent technologies.

Like drones. Nowadays, with the continuous development of flight control, navigation, communication and other technologies, the UAV industry is growing stronger and its applications are further expanded. In addition to leisure and entertainment, aerial photography of film and television, agriculture and plant protection, traffic inspection, logistics and transportation and other applications, it is also welcomed in the population census, and shows a significant value relying on huge advantages.

In the latest census work in China, the figure of drone has appeared many times. Drones have been used to prepare for the census in many towns and villages, including Yiwu in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province, and Fei County in Linyi, Shandong Province. They used drone footage to create building plots that provided a solid foundation for the local census.

It is reported that the seventh census needs to comprehensively investigate the number of population, structure, distribution, urban and rural housing and living environment changes. In other words, the built environment itself is not only a major content of the census, but also the basic premise to support the follow-up door-to-door census. based on this, the introduction of UAV effectively accelerated the efficiency of census and saved time.

Of course, the use of drones for the census is not limited to preparatory work, but also to the actual count of the population. Drones are also used in India, where censuses are often under pressure and vulnerable because of slums in cities, high mobility, religious issues and conflicts.

But taking a census with drones isn't just for us. Many animals in the animal kingdom also need drones to help them figure out what to do with their homes. In 2019, Professor Yi Stanford of the United States helped the enterprise with the "census" in the Antarctic with UAV. The efficient route planning and incomparable efficiency made the work go very smoothly.

But there is one caveat to using drones to "census" animals, and that is not to frighten them. Animals are not as familiar with UAVs as people are. They are often afraid of UAVs and easily frightened by the sound. In the past, there have been many incidents in which UAVs have scared animals to panic and killed them.

For example, in remote parts of India's east-central states, the so-called "Red Corridor" is an area where anti-government militants are active and where government workers are often attacked. Such places rely solely on people, who travel long distances to visit multiple tribes and risk their lives, so drones are often used to help.
