From January 1, 2019, the state requires that ships entering the emission control area (wharf) shall use marine fuel oil with sulfur content no more than 0.5%. How to effectively monitor the sulfur content of fuel oil used by ships in navigation is a common problem faced by the regulation of ship emission control areas around the world. The project team composed of teachers from Anxin technology and Shanghai Maritime University demonstrated the feasibility of "sniffing method" to monitor the ship's tail gas and calculate the sulfur content of fuel oil through in-depth and sufficient research, and formulated and implemented the technical scheme of using UAV to carry out "sniffing" sensor to monitor the ship's tail gas. Subsequently, the project team successfully developed the UAV ship exhaust monitoring system. The key equipment ship exhaust detection pod is 20cm long, 12cm wide, 9cm thick, and weighs only 900g. Its volume and weight have obvious advantages over domestic and foreign products, and its key technical indicators such as detection sensitivity and accuracy reach the international leading level. The system has been certified by Shanghai Institute of measurement and testing technology. At the same time, it has won more than 10 intellectual property rights, including invention patents, software copyright, academic papers and national and regional competition awards. A number of key technical indicators of the system have reached the international leading level.
On July 15, 2019 (the first time in China), August 14, August 20 and September 27, 2019, Pudong maritime bureau used the airborne "sniffing" Ship Exhaust Monitoring System to successively detect four cases of sulfur content exceeding the standard in fuel oil of ships in flight at the Yangtze River Estuary.
