The Drone Was Forced to Land Uninvited by the Power Guards

Wu Chao, a staff member of the State Grid Hubei Electric Power Operation and Maintenance Department, successfully landed a UAV that threatened the safe operation of the substation equipment in the 500 kV Xianning substation in Maqiao Town, Xianning City, Hubei Province, avoiding a possible power failure.

The operation and maintenance personnel of Xianning Substation use the anti-UAV device to protect the safety of the overhead power grid equipment
At 13:30 on May 1, Wu Chao, who was inspecting the station, suddenly heard a "buzzing sound". After careful identification, he found that it was a UAV flying back and forth over the equipment area of the substation. In order to avoid affecting the safe operation of the equipment, Wu reported to the local police, took out the anti-drone device in the station, aimed at the flying direction of the drone, turned on the anti-drone device crash landing mode and fired jamming waves. After several "shooting", he successfully forced the drone to land in a safe position in the station.

The drone was successfully forced to land within the safe area of the substation

It is reported that shortly after the crash landing on the same day, two owners came to the substation to look for the drone, Wu Chao warned the owner, in the 500 kilovolt substation, the working environment is easy to lead to the drone out of control. An out-of-control drone that touches a high-voltage power line could trip, making it even worse if it hits power grid equipment. By the time police arrived to educate them, the owner realized the mistake and took back the drone.

This is the first case of Hubei main network to take the initiative to guard against drone. With the civilian use and commercialization of drone, it has become a non-negligible safety hazard to lose control of UAVs and touch high-voltage power transmission lines or power equipment. once this happens, it is likely to cause a wide range of power outages, which will seriously affect local economic and social development and people's livelihood electricity consumption. To this end, the State Grid Hubei maintenance company to take targeted preventive measures, for the jurisdiction of each 500 kV substation unified equipped with signal blocking anti-UAV device.

Unlike traditional physical destruction countermeasures, signal blocking devices avoid endangering power grid equipment if the drone is shot down. The device sends out three kinds of interference signals of different wavebands to disconnect the data transmission, picture transmission and remote control system of the UAV within a range of 1.2km, thus triggering the emergency landing mode of the UAV, forcing the UAV to turn back or slowly land vertically.

In view of this case, the State Grid Hubei Inspection and Maintenance Company will further improve the UAV warning and defense mechanism, continue to strengthen the cooperation between the police and the public, strengthen the management of the company's self-use UAV, strictly apply for approval with the Department of Aviation Control and other relevant departments, strengthen the supervision and implementation of UAV flight norms, and ensure the safety of the "airspace of the main network".
