Analysis on the Development of Anti-UAV Technology

With the increasing popularity of drones, terrorists, criminals, fanatics and so on use drones to create serious threats. This makes anti-drone technology and systems a top priority for the military, the Department of Homeland Security, major law enforcement agencies and contractors that produce drones.  

Anti-UAV technology is divided into two main areas: detection & tracking system and interruption.

Anti-UAV systems can be ground-based, airbase-based or even hand-held. Today, most systems in the market are designed to detect or interrupt, with foundation system dominating.  

Anti-UAV missions are highly dependent on advanced sensors and long voyage time platforms to provide data fusion for warning airspace images and artificial intelligence for sorting and analyzing incoming data. This process is far more useful than transmitting raw UAV sensor data to human operators.   

Enhancement of sensor capability of anti-UAV

Sensors are also making rapid progress in sensitivity, range of action, and reduced size and power requirements. Combined with high-speed wireless networking, airborne data fusion and artificial intelligence, sensors significantly enhances the capabilities of anti-UAV systems.

Development of anti-UAV technology in military field

Anti-UAV technology for military purposes is more complex. These include the elimination of drones that do intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance and the prevention of attacks on troops or destruction of critical infrastructure.

Military anti-UAV systems rely on multilayer detection techniques such as optoelectronic / infrared, radio frequency scanner, radar, camera, jammer and tracking software. They also employ capabilities ranging from gun and rocket to laser and electronic warfare, etc.  

2) Artificial intelligence technology   

Artificial intelligence is particularly important for the future of military anti-UAV technology. The key lies in how to do real-time processing for the video and make effective judgment in complex electromagnetic environment so that the commander can make decision quickly.

In order to use artificial intelligence to identify target types, large sample data are needed for multi-round training. 

3)High-altitude long endurance technology  

Another revolutionary technology is the low-cost high-altitude long endurance (HALE). During ISR missions, HALE drones can stay in space for longer periods and provide a wider range of coverage, giving the military and Homeland Security users more opportunities to detect and identify hostile drones.

  

Summary 

Although anti-UAV technology has adopted a variety of means, but all kinds of means have certain limitations and none of the solutions can be foolproof. The sensitivity of the sensor is also a problem: both being too sensitive and reducing sensitivity can lead to wrong results.

An anti-UAV system that uses mixed data from several sensors must also be able to distinguish between legitimate and hostile, ally and enemy drones, and no known system can do that. Then the human operator must intervene. There are also potentially unfavorable consequences, ranging from being prevented by electronic warfare measures to accidentally injuring civilians or friendly forces.

The anti-UAV market also needs to cope with new advances in UAV technology. With the expansion of the UAV system market, anti-UAV systems need to be flexible enough to detect and eliminate the growing number of targets.
